The Health Services program enables high school students to make informed career choices and to attain the necessary academic qualifications and employability skills to succeed in the workplace.  The program is designed in two parts and students are screened to join the program.

________________________________

  • Part 1 includes job readiness and career exploration
  • Encompasses skills and activities to help a student learn about career opportunities, their personal preferences, occupational environment and workplace safety
  • Part 1 is completed in the high school in Grade 11 or 12

________________________________

  • In part 2, students apply to go into the workplace for an internship in the health field
  • The Community Careers Cooperative seeks placements from local health services employers and matches the students with suitable mentors
  • Placements occur in the summer and are for 6 weeks of paid employment

________________________________

  •  Students undergo an interview and application process, solid attendance (98% attendance rate-excluding excused absences) and good academic standing (65% average and passing all courses) are a part of the selection criteria
  • Community Careers Cooperative identifies employers who are willing to offer a Health Services Internship
  • Students are given placements according to the following priority:

1.)     Second year returning Health Services students

2.)     First year grade 11 Health Services students

3.)     First year grade 12 Health Services students

________________________________

  • Students must complete Health Services Part 1 by March before applying to Health Services Part 2
  • Students are matched with internship placements wherever possible
  • Employers are encouraged to interview the student on their own to ensure the best fit has been made

________________________________

  • Once the match has been made, students work for 6 weeks of paid employment during the summer months
  • For every 25 hours of work the student is eligible to receive one school credit up to a maximum of 11 credits
  • Allows the students the chance to explore the field of health while enhancing their employability skills
